Bird-watching is becoming increasingly popular in Sweden, and in the US it has been the fastest-growing outdoor activity in recent years. So we are certainly not alone in appreciating birds.
Over 25,000 people are members of national, regional or local bird-watching organisations in Sweden and they are, as said, increasing.
Bird-watching can be many things. Studying birds of prey at close range over Falsterbo may be the ultimate bird experience for one birder. Another undertakes expeditions to remote islands in the Baltic to search for Siberian rarities that have been carried off-track from their normal migration routes. And a third combines more generally oriented overseas holiday-tourism with a few days of observing exotic, colourful birds. Still others are content with the birds on display around the garden feeder in winter or the nest-boxes during summer.
Bird-watching is simply looking at birds, being mesmerized by their plumage and being able to enjoy these fantastic creatures. In the end, a more in-depth engagement also helps us to appreciate the importance of maintaining a rich bird fauna and a healthy environment for all of us.
